Through Obscurity, Dalrkly

Tom has asked that I post the following message regarding a curious claim that he is himself a fictional author:

To my readers:

I must admit, this is not the first time I have not felt exactly ‘real.’ And though I am tempted to address the issue way or another, despite my name I have never been much of an adherent to the Bellman’s rule-of-three. Instead, I say only once, believe what you will. After all, I should be amused, particularly by the fact that in my science-fictional works I have so oft written of metaphysics, parallel universes, and inter- and intradimensional rifts. I do admit my work is hard to find, although not impossible, as the intrepid Gregory Anderson will tell you. By the way, he is currently on the trail of the fictional-author story I wrote in 1976, published in a one-shot bearing the inauspicious name of Kukuanafan. But then, I didn’t write that one under my own name, so I don’t suppose it will prove much of anything. In any case, I expect he will find a copy, as sooner or later everything turns up. Perhaps when it does, someone will want to publish it. I am as proud of that story as I am of any of my work, although that isn’t saying much.

Oh, and don’t bother sending Ralph after me. He’ll only upset my cat Fleena and get himself into more trouble than it’s worth.

Namaste,

TWB

Now shipping!

Philip José Farmer's fictional-author collection, Venus on the Half-Shell and Others, which includes a foreword by Tom Wode Bellman, is now shipping from the publisher. This is the first new writing by Tom Wode Bellman to be published in over ten years, so if you're a TWB fan be sure to snag a copy while they last! The publisher expects to book's print run to sell out because of high demand.

Tom's foreword is a tribute to Farmer, and relates how Mr. Farmer once solicited a short story from TWB for a book he was considering editing. Unfortunately Tom no longer has a copy of the story and I am currently trying to track down its only publication in an obscure SF/F fanzine. I will post immediately if I am able to find a copy.

VENUS cover

Subterranean Press has posted the cover art for Philip José Farmer's collection Venus on the Half-Shell and Others, which includes a Foreword by Tom Wode Bellman.

The book is already garnering positive reviews from the likes of Publishers Weekly. TWB comments in an email:

I never read reviews of my own work. I am obscure in my own mind.

A classic TWB quote. Tom, just to let you know, you're not obscure on this blog! :-)

TWB MySpace

More exciting news: Tom Wode Bellman now has a MySpace page.

New foreword by Tom Wode Bellman!

I have excellent news. The writing gig I had mentioned in the previous post has been finalized. Tom has given me permission to announce that he has written a foreword to the new Philip José Farmer collection, Venus on the Half-Shell and Others. The book is reportedly due out in February 2008 and Tom Wode Bellman's foreword will be about a story Farmer asked him to write back in the 1970s. To find out where you can order a copy, visit the editor's webpage here.

Big News

I am in shock. Tom Wode Bellman has emailed me. And if that alone isn't absolutely fantastic news, I think I have just served as a go-between to arrange a writing gig for him. I'm not in a position to write about that yet, but as soon as I have the green light, I'll let you know. I will say that the writing gig is a foreword to a collection by a major science fiction writer. Let's hope it pans out.

Tom is alive and well. He wanted me to post the following message:

Greetings, readers (if any) of The Unofficial Tom Wode Bellman Blog. I must say it startled--and I confess somewhat frightened--me to find a website devoted to me and my writings. As I haven't written anything in over a decade, I thought I would be long forgotten by now, if I had ever been remembered at all. However, seeing this site and the listing of my novels and many of my stories, has also exhilarated me. Though I am retired, and haven't picked up a pen or pounded the keys for many years, I feel that familiar tingling urge rise up in me again, although it may just be acid reflux. But who knows? Stranger things have happened, like finding a blog devoted to the obscure science-fiction writer Tom Wode Bellman. In any case, thank you for visiting, and thank you Gregory, for remembering.

TWB autograph

With kind thanks to Craig Shaw, a science fiction fan who actually met Tom Wode Bellman on several occasions during the 1960s and '70s, I am able to post TWB's autograph:

Craig has also informed me that Bellman moved to the Midwest sometime in the late '60s or early '70s. He also describes him as a "Great guy, brimming with enthusiasm and a true love for SF." Well, we already knew the latter!

Thanks again, Craig, for the info.
